This family-owned, family-operated confectionary business caters to everyone craving a delicious gourmet cupcake that is 100% gluten-free. What started as a cute little side business to teach my kids – Wyatt and Layla – about entrepreneurship quickly grew into this awesome passion project that you see before you. The three of us, plus my sweet hubby Rich, have been managing this venture with the dream to grow our new bakery and cafe in Bowling Green, KY. Maybe we’ll see you there!
Why gluten-free specifically? Trust me; it’s not just me jumping on a trend!
In 2010, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. It was a pretty pivotal moment in my life that shaped a lot of my personal choices after. Suddenly, I was hyperaware of every dish, snack, and dessert I was putting in my body. And having spent the past decade learning what I can (and, sadly, can’t) eat, I also discovered that most restaurants and bakeries who claim they are “gluten-free” are actually more “gluten-friendly”! Despite what I’m sure are their best efforts, cross-contamination can (and unfortunately does) happen when a kitchen isn’t completely gluten-free. Not great news for me (and people like me).
Knowing the struggle of having both a sweet tooth and celiac disease, I decided to fill an overlooked gap in the market. I decided that I wanted to give people with similar health conditions and food sensitivities more options — starting with great-tasting sweets, pastries, and baked goods! After years of practice, I’m proud to say I’ve perfected my own custom, gluten-free flour blend; the secret ingredient behind Awaken Bakery’s safe and tantalizingly tasty cupcakes.
